The background
"Sitting is the new smoking" has become a catchphrase — and there really is some research behind it. But a closer look at the key sources also shows: it's not about banning sitting altogether, but about how we sit and how often we change position.
The phrase was coined by Mayo Clinic researcher Dr. James Levine. An important basis for it came from a study by the Pennington Biomedical Research Center using data from more than 17,000 Canadians: it found a link between long, uninterrupted daily sitting time and an increased mortality risk — regardless of how physically active people otherwise were in their leisure time. Regular breaks from sitting therefore appear to have an effect of their own, one that leisure-time exercise alone does not offset.
A widely cited study by Raichlen, Pontzer, and colleagues (PNAS, 2020) examined the Hadza, a hunter-gatherer community in Tanzania, using movement sensors — and produced a surprising finding: the Hadza sit or rest for almost as long, in total, as people in industrialized nations. The difference lies not in the duration but in the posture. Resting positions such as deep squatting or kneeling keep the leg and core muscles noticeably more active than sitting in a chair does. The authors call this the "Inactivity Mismatch Hypothesis": our bodies are evolutionarily adapted to varyingly active resting postures — not to sitting motionless in one and the same position for hours on end.
Cultural anthropology also shows that the chair is just one of many solutions. Anthropologist Gordon W. Hewes documented more than 100 distinct habitual sitting and resting postures from cultures around the globe in his widely cited study on the worldwide distribution of resting postures — from deep squatting among many African and Asian ethnic groups to distinct kneeling-sit forms such as among the Ainu in Japan or the sitting habits of North American peoples such as the Kaska in Canada. By comparison, the office chair as we know it is a young and relatively one-sided invention.
Evolutionary biologist Daniel Lieberman (Harvard), who examines exactly this research in detail in his book "Exercised", also warns against overstating the case: sitting itself is a normal human behavior that has always been common, and it is not inherently harmful. It becomes a problem mainly when a single position is held for very long stretches without interruption.
